Dr. Judith G. Hall was born in Boston, Massachusetts.? During her childhood she lived in New England, the Midwest and Seattle, Washington.? After graduation from high school in Seattle, she attended Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.? She received her M.D. from the University of Washington in 1966, completing a master’s degree in Genetics with Dr. Arno Motulsky at the same time.? She did her Pediatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and fellowship in Medical Genetics with Dr. Victor McKusick and in Pediatric Endocrinology with Dr. Robert Blizzard. In 1972, she joined the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine, University of Washington.? In 1981, she moved to the University of British Columbia as Professor of Medical Genetics and Director of the Genetics Services for British Columbia.? In 1988 she received a Killam Senior Fellowship for a sabbatical year in Oxford, England.? From 1990-2000, she was Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia and British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital. During 2001, she was a Distinguished Fellow at Christ College, Cambridge, UK.
She has received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Wellesley College; a Senior Killam Prize for research; the Colonel Sanders March of Dimes Award for lifetime achievement in Clinical Genetics; the YWCA Distinguished Women Award in Science and Technology; the Phoenix-Anni Verdi Award; the Science Council of British Columbia Gold Medal; the Ross Award of the Canadian Pediatric Society ; the Bock Award and the Queen Jubilee Medal; has been inducted into the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars and into the B.C. Science World Hall of Fame; was recognized by American Health as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in 1996 and “Best Doctors in Canada” in 2003 and by the UBC Faculty of Medicine with a Golden Jubilee Award of Excellence ; and she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998.
Her research interests are in the areas of human congenital anomalies including neural tube defects, the genetics of short stature, mechanisms of disease such as mosaicism and imprinting, the natural history of genetic disorders, the genetics of connective tissue disorders such as arthrogryposis and dwarfism, and monozygotic twins.? She has described many new syndromes and the natural history of many disorders.
She has published over 270 original articles, 120 chapters and sections of conference proceedings, and 5 books.? The book she co-edited on human malformations, received the award for best medical book published in 1993 by the Association of American Publishers.? She has served on the editorial boards of many journals, including being a founding editor of the American Journal of Medical Genetics, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine/Journal Watch, and Growth, Genetics, and Hormones.? She has played an active role in developing standards for Clinical Genetic services and in establishing liaisons with lay groups related to specific genetic disease entities. She has been involved in education from undergraduate to continuing medical education and has personally been responsible for over 30 subspecialty fellows. In Pediatrics, she became involved in pediatric education, health care delivery for children, child advocacy issues, gender issues, international Pediatric public health, and Pediatric physician resource planning.
She is a fellow of the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Medical Genetics, the Canadian College of Medical Genetics, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatrics and Medical Genetics) and the American College of Medical Genetics. She was on the founding board and Vice President of the American Board of Medical Genetics. She has been Vice President of the Society of Pediatric Research, and President of the Western Society for Pediatric Research, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the American Pediatric Society. She has served as consultant to the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation; on the Management Committee of the Canadian Genome Analysis and Technology Program; as an advisor to the American National Centre for Human Genome Research Intramural Program; as Chair of the Canadian Paediatric Society Ross Conference and several David Smith Morphogenesis and Malformation meetings. She has been on the Boards of the Gairdner Foundation, Medical Research Council of Canada, the International Federation of Human Genetics, and both the American and Canadian Children’s Miracle Networks. She is on the Boards of the Vancouver Foundation, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, the Troubadour Institute, the International Pediatric Association (North American representative), Genome Canada (as Vice President), McCreary Youth Foundation, and Green College (UBC), and is on the councils of the Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine and National Institute of Child Health and Development. She has been one of the Canadian Science and Technology Advisors and chaired the Science Advisory Board of Health Canada. She is a founding member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and responsible for its first assessment.
